Almost every single time somebody loses a job they think the goal is simple – Go find another one. Get back to normal. Restore what was lost.
But what if the real opportunity isn’t to replace the job… it’s to redesign your entire life?
Because the truth is, for many people, the setback wasn’t the problem. It was the signal.
Welcome to Life By Design 360 Life Mastery Monday, the podcast where we design a life you actually want to live.
I’m your host, Doug Reed, and today we’re talking about something that can completely change your trajectory—career planning after a setback. Not survival. Not damage control.
Reinvention—with purpose.
THE WAKE-UP CALL
A layoff, leaving a government job, or simply waking up one day realizing you don’t want to do what you’ve been doing anymore—it hits hard. Not just financially, but emotionally. Your identity gets wrapped up in your work. Your routine, your sense of stability, your direction. And when that’s disrupted, it can feel like everything is uncertain.
But here’s the shift I want you to make. What if this isn’t happening to you… but for you?
Because many times, the path you were on wasn’t leading where you thought. It was just comfortable enough to keep you there. Until something forced a change. And that moment, as uncomfortable as it is, is where your real life begins.
WHY MOST PEOPLE STAY STUCK
Here’s what most people do after a setback. They panic. They update their resume, start applying everywhere, and take the next opportunity that shows up. And look, that’s understandable. Bills don’t stop. Responsibilities don’t go away.
But here’s the problem. They rebuild the same life that just broke. Same structure. Same dependency. Same risks. Just a different employer. And a few years later, they find themselves right back in the same place.
That’s not reinvention. That’s repetition.
FROM REACTIVE TO INTENTIONAL
Career planning changes everything because instead of reacting to what happens, you start designing what comes next. When you do that, everything begins to shift. You move from surviving to building. From uncertainty to direction. From dependency to control.
And this is where life starts to feel different. Not just better but aligned.
BUILDING YOUR VISION
Let’s start with the foundation. Not your next job—your future life.
Think five to ten years out. What does your ideal day actually look like? Where are you living? Who are you spending time with? What kind of work are you doing? And how are you getting paid?
And here’s the big question. Is your income still tied to one source, or do you have control over it?
Once you see that clearly, everything else begins to organize around it. Write it down. Because vague goals create vague lives, but a clear vision creates momentum.
TURNING VISION INTO STRATEGY
Now we take that vision and turn it into something real. Break it into phases.
In the short term, the next six to twelve months, focus on stabilizing, learning, and repositioning yourself. In the mid-term, one to three years, begin building income streams, expanding your opportunities, and increasing your control. And in the long term, five years and beyond, you’re creating freedom, flexibility, and optionality.
This is where most people miss it. They plan for income, but not for control of income.
So instead of saying you want a better job, shift it. Start thinking in terms of income that is not dependent on a single decision-maker. That one shift changes everything.
BUILDING THE BRIDGE
Now we build the bridge to get there. Ask yourself what skills you need, what relationships you need, and what kind of environment will support the person you’re becoming.
Because your future is going to require a different version of you.
Maybe that means learning something new. Maybe it’s building a personal brand. Maybe it’s starting something small that grows over time. Maybe it’s surrounding yourself with people who think bigger and act differently.
At this stage, your investment shifts. It’s no longer about external security. It becomes about internal capability.
THE MENTAL SHIFT
Let’s be honest. This part isn’t easy. There will be doubts. There will be fear. You might question whether you’re too late, too far behind, or whether this is even realistic.
But here’s the truth. You’re not starting over. You’re starting smarter.
Because now you see the game differently. And once you see it, you can’t unsee it.
THE STORY
Let me give you a quick example. A woman I’ll call Sarah spent fifteen years in a stable government role. Then she was laid off. No plan. Completely shaken.
But instead of rushing into the next job, she paused. She learned digital marketing, started helping small businesses, and slowly built a client base.
Over time, that turned into a consistent income. Then into a business. Then into freedom.
She didn’t just recover. She redesigned.
YOUR ACTION PLAN
Take a few minutes and write down your five to ten year vision. Not your next step—your long-term direction. Then identify a few short-term moves you can make right now that move you closer to that vision.
Most importantly, begin thinking about at least one income path that is not dependent on a single employer.
Because once that shift happens in your mind, everything else begins to follow.
Your career doesn’t define you. But it can either limit you… or expand you.
And right now, you have a choice. Go back to what’s familiar or build something better.
If you’re ready to take that next step, I want to give you a tool that will help you map this out clearly.
Go to go.lifebydesign360.com/9-point and download the 9 Point Reinvention Toolkit.
It will walk you through your income strategy, your transition plan, and how to begin building an income you can’t be fired from.
If this episode spoke to you, share it with someone who needs to hear it, and make sure you’re subscribed to Life By Design 360.
Until next time, keep designing. Because your best life isn’t behind you—it’s being built right now.
