I’m going to share something with you that can make or break your journey during life’s most challenging seasons. We’re diving into the power of self-discipline – and why it’s crucial when you’re laid off and working to reinvent your life. That’s because when you’ve mastered this skill you can truly create a powerful future. And, today, I’m going to master self-discipline which can lead you to a great job, an income you can’t ever be fired from and mastering your financial future.
Look let’s be real. Being laid off can feel like the rug has been pulled out from under you. It’s disorienting, maybe even a little scary. But here’s the thing – while you can’t always control what happens to you, you can control how you respond. And self-discipline is the key that unlocks the door to creating a future that’s not just good, but amazing.
Let’s break it down.
What is self-discipline, really? It’s not just about forcing yourself to wake up at 5 AM or resisting the last cookie. At its core, self-discipline is about mastering your thoughts, emotions, and actions, even when things get tough. It’s the skill that allows you to stay focused on your goals, even when motivation fades.
And here’s a secret: Motivation is fleeting. Discipline? That sticks around.
Think of it like this – self-discipline is the quiet engine that keeps driving you forward, even on days when you don’t feel like it. And that steady movement is exactly what you need when you’re stepping into the unknown.
When you lose your job, emotions hit hard. There’s frustration, disappointment, maybe even self-doubt. But here’s where self-discipline changes the game.
Instead of spiraling, you set boundaries. You give yourself a day or two to process, sure, but then? You take action. You create routines, you stick to them, and you set small goals every single day.
Maybe you decide to spend 2 hours a day networking on LinkedIn. Or you commit to learning a new skill for 30 minutes each morning. These small, consistent actions compound over time. Before you know it, you’re not just coping with the change – you’re thriving in it.
The truth is, when you lose structure, it’s easy to drift. Self-discipline gives you that structure back. It transforms uncertainty into opportunity.
Now let’s talk about reinvention. This is where things get exciting. You might be thinking, “Okay, I lost my job. Now what?” Here’s where self-discipline really shines.
Reinvention takes vision and action. You might have big dreams about starting your own business, pivoting careers, or chasing that passion you’ve been putting off. But without discipline, those dreams stay in your head.
So, what do you do? You build habits that align with your goals. You stay consistent, even when progress feels slow. And most importantly, you hold yourself accountable. Remember – every step forward, no matter how small, is progress.
Let me tell you a quick story.
One of the people that I met when I was counseling people at Lee Hecht Harrison became a great client and friend. We often got together, and he shared with me his secrets regarding creating daily habits, which ultimately led him not only to the new job, but also to reformatting everything that he needed to get to financial freedom as quickly as possible. At the time I didn’t really think much of it as I also knew that I had my own daily routine which was similar. Regarding staying on track, both of us had certain habits, commitments and routines that led to ultimate success.
At the time I was only thinking of what it is he and I needed to do, but looking back on this knowing how to create that self-discipline which leads to following daily goals, can make a huge difference. Today, that person is completely and totally retired and completely financially free. He’s also one of the people that I spoke to regarding what he got out of that outplacement company that inspired me to start Life by Design 360 so I can help you on your journey too.
Alright, let’s get practical. How do you actually build self-discipline? Here are a few strategies you can start using today:
- Create a Routine – Structure your day, even if you’re not working. Wake up at the same time, dedicate hours to job searching or skill-building, and take regular breaks. Routine keeps you grounded.
- Set Clear Goals – Break big goals into small, manageable tasks. Celebrate small wins.
- Eliminate Distractions – Turn off notifications, create a dedicated workspace, and be intentional with your time.
- Practice Self-Compassion – Self-discipline doesn’t mean being hard on yourself. It’s about staying committed while recognizing you’re human. If you slip, get back on track without judgment.
- Visualize Success – Spend a few minutes each day imagining the future you’re building. Visualization strengthens your focus and keeps you aligned with your goals.
The best part? Self-discipline doesn’t just help you get through job loss – it sets you up for lifelong success. When you cultivate this skill, it ripples into every part of your life. Relationships, health, career – all of it benefits from your ability to stay focused and intentional.
And remember, self-discipline isn’t about perfection. It’s about progress. One step at a time, one day at a time.
As you move forward, I want you to ask yourself – what small action can I take today to build a better tomorrow?
