Why Building a Strong Online Presence After a Layoff to Build Your Side Hack into a Business is So Important

Listen to the Podcast Here

Hello there and welcome to Life by Design 360. It’s Thursday and that means business. Creating a side hack, you can turn into business and an income you can’t ever get fired from.
I’m your host Doug Reed and I’m thrilled that you’re joining me today. If you’ve found yourself at a crossroads, perhaps you’ve been laid off, or maybe you’re just ready to take control of your future, this episode is for you. We’re diving deep into a topic that’s absolutely essential when starting a business, developing your brand identity.

At the end of today’s podcast, I’ll show you how to get your free nine-point reinvention kickoff blueprint. It will help you to eliminate the stress, anger, and confusion from a layoff, impending layoff, or being stuck in a dead-end job. It is your blueprint to an income you can’t ever get fired from and help you to get on the fastest path possible retirement and financial freedom so that you can live life on your terms, not somebody else’s.

Now, here’s the thing. Let’s be real. Losing a job can totally shake your confidence, and let’s face it, a lot more than that.

But it’s also a rare chance to hit the reset, redefine your path, and build something extraordinary that’s all yours. It’s all your own. And here’s the kicker.
If you’re stepping into the world of entrepreneurship, understanding, and crafting your brand identity isn’t just a nice have-to-do, it’s mission critical. So stick with me because by the end of this episode, you’ll not only know why brand identity is your secret weapon, but also why starting it and building it the way that you need to can set you up for big-time, long-term success.
Let’s do this.

What exactly is brand identity? First, let’s just totally clear it up. This is something you need to know. What is brand identity and what does it actually mean? Think of your brand identity as the personality of your business.

It’s how you present yourself to the world and how the world perceives you. It’s made up of a few pretty important key elements. First of all, there’s your visuals.

Things like your logo, your brand colors, the fonts you use. These are the first things that people notice. It may be subconscious, but believe me, they’re noticing it.

Your message. This includes your tone of voice, the language you use, and the story you tell to connect with your audience. And then of course, and this is a big one too, your values and your mission.
These are the beliefs and the purpose that guides every decision you make from the products you offer to the way that you interact with the people you serve, your customers, clients, or patients. Picture this. Your brand identity is the vibe that people get when they come across your business.
Is it bold and edgy? Is it warm and welcoming? How about high-end and exclusive? This vibe creates an emotional connection that goes far beyond your products or your services. When you get this right, you’re no longer just an option in a crowded market. You become the option that people remember and trust.

Now, let’s talk a little bit more about why brand identity is a game changer, especially now. The thing is, if you’re going to stand out, especially after layoff and getting started, you need this. First, it establishes credibility.

A polished, cohesive brand makes you look and sound like a serious contender, even if you’re currently just a team member of one working from your kitchen table. That’s okay. Everyone has to start somewhere.

Personally, me, I started in basement. So the thing is, you got to do it. That was decades ago.
Anyway, second, it’s about building trust. People are drawn to brands that feel authentic and align with their values. When your brand feels real and relatable, customers are more likely to engage and more importantly, come back.

Third, differentiation. There are probably hundreds of businesses offering something similar to what you’re launching. Your brand identity is what sets you apart.

It’s how you say, here’s why we’re different and here’s why we’re better for you. Fourth, it creates consistency. Whether someone finds you on Instagram, your website, or through word of mouth, a strong brand identity ensures that they get a clear, consistent message every time.
And consistency builds recognition, which also builds trust, and that leads to loyalty. Finally, it helps you focus your efforts. With a clear identity, every decision, whether it’s about marketing, product features, or customer service becomes simpler.

You just ask, does this align with our brand? If yes, go for it. If not, rethink it. As a matter of fact, don’t just rethink it.

Probably can it. Move on. That’s okay.
Now that we know why it matters, let’s get into the how. Here are five actionable steps to building a brand identity that lasts. Define your purpose and your values.

Start by asking yourself, why does my business exist? What changes do I want to make? Your, you know, purpose is really, truly your North Star and your values are your compass that keeps you on track. This foundation will shape every other aspect of your brand. Now, you need to understand your target audience.

Let’s get crystal clear on this and who it is you’re serving. Who is your avatar? What’s their deal? What’s their story? What’s their background? You need to know who that person is and what their situation is very, very, very well. What is it that they need? What are they struggling with? What excites them? When you understand their world, you can tailor your brand to resonate with them deeply.
Now, craft your visual identity. This is where you choose your logo, your colors, and your typography. These should reflect your brand’s identity and your personality.

And don’t worry if you’re not a designer. There are affordable tools like Canva and great freelance platforms like Fiverr or Upwork that can help. And then develop your brand’s voice.

Decide how you want to sound. Are you friendly and casual? Hopefully, you know, like I feel like I am being with you and, you know, that’s the way that I am anyway. Or are you more professional and authoritative? Your tone should align with both your brand’s values and your audience’s expectations.

But here’s something else that I’ve learned from Russell Brunson and a lot of other experts. The thing is, don’t try and act like somebody that you’re not. You know what? I mean, because if you try to act like somebody you’re not, the people that you serve, they’re going to see right through it.
And you’re never going to sound authentic. And you’ve got to sound authentic. Create a brand story.

Share your journey. People love stories. They absolutely love stories.

There’s something called story selling, okay, as opposed to storytelling. It’s a big deal. Tell them why you started this business and how you’re solving their problems.

The more authentic you are, the stronger the connection you’ll build. Didn’t I just say that? Remember, this isn’t something you do once and forget. Your brand identity is a living, breathing thing that evolves as your business grows.
All right, so let’s talk about the long-term payoff of a strong brand identity. Let’s wrap this up by talking about the big picture payoff. Building a strong brand identity isn’t just about looking good at launch.

It’s about setting yourself up for long-term success. Think about this. Think about Tony Robbins and, you know, confidence.

He’s all about confidence. And then think about, you know, Gary Vee, you know, Vaynerchuk. And he’s kind of like in your face.

Definitely, you know, confident, but he’s in your face. And then think about Russell Brunson. And Russell Brunson is this really cool, kind of laid-back guy, but he’s really, I mean, he can get kind of spastic on you at times.

But I mean, he’s all about power, and he’s all about momentum, and moving forward, and getting you going, and the whole thing. And then if you know Dan Kennedy, Dan Kennedy is like the authority’s authority. I mean, he just exudes confidence in a quiet, calm, kind of debonair type of manner.
So if you know who those people are, hopefully you can identify. Or if you don’t know who they are, check them out, and, you know, see if you can tell what I’m talking about there. So again, the thing is, you’re not going to resonate with everyone, okay? That’s just the deal.

But if you resonate with your crowd, your tribe, the ones that you are truly trying to help, it matters. Here’s the thing. When people feel connected to your brand, they don’t just buy woods.
They come back, and they bring their friends with them, hopefully a lot of them, right? And then supporting your growth as you expand, whether it’s adding new products, reaching new audiences, or scaling operations, a solid brand identity makes these transitions smoother and more effective. And at the end of the day, your brand is your business’s most valuable asset. It’s what people remember.
It’s what they recommend. It’s what keeps them coming back year after year.

So that’s a wrap for today’s episode of Life by Design 360.
If you’re starting a business, especially after layoff, I want you to remember this. Your brand identity is one of your foundations, and it’s a big deal. It’s not just about the colors you pick or the logo that you design.
