Your Next Move: Why Filing for Unemployment Matter

Listen to the Podcast Here

Hello and welcome to
Life by Design 360—Our Tuesday podcast that helps you take control of your career journey and design a life you truly love, especially after a layoff or career change.

Today, we’re talking about something that often gets overlooked or misunderstood during those first few disorienting days after a job loss: filing for unemployment benefits.

I’m Doug Reed, and for the 12 years that big outplacement firm brought me in to talk to their clients, this is one of the areas that often got really messed up. Today, I’m going to show you why getting your unemployment benefits isn’t only acceptable, it’s crucial for your short as well as your long-term financial future. I’ll also share with you why not getting this benefit could destroy your financial outlook and how to avoid catastrophe.

Now, I get it—this topic might not sound flashy, but trust me when I say that understanding and utilizing unemployment benefits could be one of the smartest, most strategic moves you can make after a layoff. It’s not just about the money—it’s about creating the breathing room you need to make empowered, long-term decisions about your next chapter.

Many of the people that I ran into during those 12 years that the big outplacement firm brought me in said they felt unpatriotic about getting money from the government. Or they felt it was the wrong thing to do. What I explained to them is that their ex employer had to pay a tax in order to put money into a fund just for this purpose. Their ex employer didn’t have a choice. When all of those people I spoke to understood this and I also explained the ramifications financially of not taking the unemployment income benefit as well as showed them the importance of their finances, now and into the future the answer became clear.

So, whether you’re feeling anxious, frustrated, or just uncertain about what to do next—today, I’ll walk you through how filing for unemployment can help stabilize your life and get you pointed in the right direction. Let’s dive in.

Why Filing Matters

Let’s start with the basics—why is filing for unemployment such a big deal?

Unemployment benefits serve one simple but powerful purpose: to provide a financial safety net while you’re in between jobs. And this safety net is not a handout—it’s something you’ve earned. You paid into this system with every paycheck you’ve ever received, and it exists to support people just like you when the unexpected happens.

And I’ll be honest—without that buffer, many people start to panic. Bills pile up. Stress levels rise. And before long, you might feel tempted to take the first job offer that comes your way, even if it doesn’t match your goals, values, or skill set.

But when you file for unemployment promptly, it creates a buffer zone—a window of time to think clearly, act intentionally, and pursue the right opportunity instead of the fastest one.

Another big reason to file immediately is this: timing matters. Every state has different rules—some have waiting periods; some have strict filing deadlines. Missing those windows could mean missing out on weeks, even months, of financial support.

So don’t wait. Even if you’re getting severance or think you might not qualify—it’s worth checking. Many states allow you to receive benefits once severance ends or concurrently depending on the structure of the payout. A short call or online search could mean thousands of dollars back in your pocket.

Busting the Myths

Now let’s tackle some of the biggest myths I hear all the time about unemployment benefits.

Myth #1: “Filing means I failed.”

Let me be very clear—it absolutely does not. The economy shifts. Industries evolve. Companies downsize, merge, restructure. And when that happens, even the most skilled and hardworking professionals can find themselves without a job. Filing for unemployment is not a sign of failure—it’s a sign of resilience and resourcefulness.

Myth #2: “It’s too hard to apply.”

Yes, there’s some paperwork. And yes, the websites can feel a bit outdated. But in most cases, state unemployment systems have step-by-step online guides that walk you through the process. Plus, many career centers and workforce development offices are more than happy to assist you.

In fact, I recommend blocking out 1–2 hours and just tackling it in one go. Set yourself up with everything you need—recent pay stubs, W-2s, the dates of your most recent job, reason for separation—and knock it out. You’ll feel so much lighter once it’s done.

Myth #3: “Unemployment makes people lazy.”

This one is really ridiculous. The idea that accepting support makes you less motivated? It’s simply not backed by evidence—and it doesn’t reflect the experience of most people I talk to. I mean, you’re not getting it forever, you’re only getting it for a short period of time – to get you through an unexpected career transition with the least amount of financial destruction possible

If anything, having your basic needs met—rent, food, electricity—can increase motivation. It frees up mental bandwidth so you can think clearly and act strategically. You’re not scrambling for survival; you’re planning your comeback.

Turning Support into Strategy

So let’s dig into what unemployment benefits actually enable you to do—beyond just paying the bills.

First and foremost, you gain the gift of time. Time to reflect. Time to research. Time to really ask yourself: What do I want next? What do I want more of in my career? What do I want less of?

And here’s where it gets really important: that financial breathing room allows you to conduct a targeted job search. Instead of firing off 50 generic resumes, you can take the time to tailor each application, prepare for interviews properly, and follow up professionally.

You can also invest in yourself during this time. Take an online course. Attend a virtual workshop. Explore certifications in emerging fields or revisit skills you haven’t used in a while. Sites like Coursera, edX, and LinkedIn Learning often offer free or low-cost programs to help you upskill and reskill.

Of course, this is exactly what you get at LifeByDesign360 Academy and Community. I know, shameless plug – but it’s important to know. The Academy and Community only has one purpose, to get you the job, set you up on the best career path, help you create an amazing side hustle, if you want it and set you up for total financial freedom. Okay, that’s more than 1 thing…

I’ve even seen people pivot to entirely new industries during their unemployment window—tech, healthcare, project management—you name it. And many of those folks say they never would’ve considered those moves if they hadn’t had the time and space to explore their options.

Let’s not forget unemployment also buys you time to network. Reconnect with old colleagues, attend virtual events, schedule informational interviews. You’d be surprised how often a conversation—not a job board—leads to your next opportunity.

How to File

Alright, let’s walk through the actual steps to get started.

  1. Gather Your Documents
    You’ll typically need:

    1. Social Security Number
    2. Driver’s license or ID
    3. Your most recent employer’s name and address
    4. Dates of employment
    5. Reason for separation
    6. Recent pay stubs or W-2s
  2. Visit Your State’s Unemployment Website
Every state has its own portal. Just search “[Your State] unemployment benefits” and look for the .gov site. Most have straightforward instructions and FAQs.
  3. File ASAP
Don’t wait. Even if you’re unsure about eligibility, go ahead and file. Let the agency determine your status. You might be surprised by what you qualify for.
  4. Stay Engaged in Your Job Search
Many states require weekly proof of job-search activity. Keep a log of applications, interviews, and networking efforts.
  5. Seek Support
If you get stuck, reach out to your local workforce development office. They can help with filing, job placement assistance, and even career coaching.

And remember—this is not a one-time process. Each week, you’ll need to certify that you’re actively looking for work. Make it part of your weekly routine—just like meal prep or workouts.

Let me leave you with this:

Filing for unemployment isn’t just a financial decision—it’s a powerful bridge to the life you really want. It’s about taking control of your future, and using every resource available to build a stronger foundation for what’s next.

This season of transition—while difficult—can be one of the most transformational times in your life. So don’t go it alone. Use the systems, support, and space you’ve earned to move forward with confidence.

Because here’s the truth: this is not the end. This is your opportunity to build an amazing future, an amazing life.

Tomorrow, I’m going to go over specialized, little known financial planning and investment techniques that you should implement when going through a layoff or job change that other advisors just don’t know about. Anyone can roll over a 401k, or at least they should, but tips to maximize severance pay, what to do with to do cut down taxes or what you must know about stock plans or options or how to max out the benefits from your x-employer and into your personal portfolio – that’s an area we’ve been experts in for more than a decade. I even wrote the book on it.
