Today, we’re writing about something that might surprise you. It’s not a tech tool, not a motivational quote, and not a secret productivity hack. It’s something ancient, something human—teamwork.
Now, you might be thinking: “Doug, I’m trying to reinvent my life, not lead a team project at work.” But stick with me, because what I want to show you today is how collaborating with others isn’t just helpful—it’s essential for personal growth, happiness, and success, especially when you’re rebuilding after a career shake-up.
Let’s start with a mindset shift.
When we hear the word “teamwork,” we often think about workplace clichés—those trust fall exercises at corporate retreats or group projects where one person does all the work.
But that’s not the kind of teamwork I’m talking about.
True teamwork is about collaboration with a purpose. It’s about coming together with others to create something meaningful, something greater than what any one person could do alone. That could be starting a business, joining a nonprofit, building a podcast (yep, been there!), or even just forming a support group with others who are also reinventing themselves.
It’s about forming a team around your life—not just your job.
The question becomes: Who’s on your team for this next chapter?
If you’ve recently been laid off, left a secure job, or just reached the point where you’re done settling, you might feel like the rug’s been pulled out from under you.
I get it. That identity—your title, your role, your sense of worth—can all get tangled up in that job. When it’s gone, the instinct is often to retreat. To put your head down, try to figure it all out on your own.
I’ve been there too.
Years ago, when I stepped away from mortgage banking, a steady salary with commission, that looked great on paper but felt hollow on the inside, I thought I had to prove something. That I could do it alone. That independence meant success.
But here’s what I learned: Reinvention is not a solo act. In fact, going it alone can delay your growth. It can keep you stuck in self-doubt, spinning your wheels.
What pulled me out? Other people. Conversations. Collaborations. Sharing ideas. Getting the right information, asking for feedback and admitting I didn’t have it all figured out.
When I did and was in with the right people, everything changed.
Let’s put some science behind this.
Research from Harvard and Stanford shows that collaboration actually increases our motivation and sense of purpose. One study found that simply believing you’re working with others toward a shared goal makes you more engaged and persistent—even if you’re doing the work separately.
On a biological level, working with others releases oxytocin—the “bonding hormone.” It reduces stress, builds trust, and deepens connections.
You know what else teamwork builds? Resilience. People in collaborative environments bounce back faster from setbacks. Why? Because they don’t have to carry the emotional and practical burden alone.
If you’re facing uncertainty right now—teamwork isn’t just a soft skill. It’s a survival strategy.
Let me share a bit more of my story.
When I left mortgage banking, I didn’t have a 10-point plan. What I had was a burning desire to do something that created a steady income and growth potential.
I tried to map everything alone. I thought, “Doug, you’ve got to prove yourself. You’ve got to figure this out before you involve anyone.”
You know how that turned out?
I burned out. I stalled. I lost direction.
It wasn’t until I opened up to others—joined a mastermind group, found a coach, reconnected with old mentors—that clarity started to come back. I saw possibilities I didn’t know existed. I got real feedback. I gained confidence.
And I realized this truth: When you connect with others who believe in you, something inside you wakes up.
That version of you who’s creative, capable, resilient—it comes back to life.
Let me ask you this: Who in your life helps bring out the best in you? That’s who belongs on your team.
Let’s go deeper.
Teamwork isn’t just helpful for getting things done—it’s essential for personal growth, happiness, and long-term success. Why?
Because:
- Growth happens in reflection and conversation. Others challenge our thinking, help us course-correct, and inspire new ideas.
- Happiness is magnified in connection. We’re social creatures. Achievements feel better when shared.
- Success becomes sustainable when built on community.
You’re not just climbing a ladder—you’re building a legacy with others.
Even at a spiritual or soulful level, we grow through relationships. Through collaboration, we become better communicators, more compassionate, and more aware of the world beyond ourselves.
That’s not just career advice. That’s life advice.
How do you put this into action? How do you build that team when you’re starting over?
Here are three powerful ways:
- Join or create a peer group.
A mastermind, a career transition circle, a coffee group with fellow creatives. Meet consistently, set goals, and offer feedback. You’ll gain clarity and courage. - Collaborate before you’re “ready.”
Don’t wait until you’ve figured everything out. Join a project. Offer your skills. Ask someone if they need help. Being in motion with others creates momentum. - Find a mentor—or be one.
Mentorship is powerful on both sides. Having someone guide you accelerates growth. But mentoring others? That unlocks confidence, purpose, and legacy.
Let me say this again: You don’t have to do this alone. And you’re not meant to. I think you know where you can find these people.
As we wrap up, I want to leave you with this thought: The best version of your life isn’t something you stumble upon alone in a moment of genius. It’s something you build—brick by brick—with the help of others. With people who believe in you, challenge you, and cheer for you.
Whether you’re picking up the pieces after a layoff, stepping out of a government job, or just waking up to a deeper purpose—you don’t have to map the entire journey. Just find your next teammate. Join hands. Share ideas. Collaborate on the dream.
Because that dream life of yours? It’s not just designed, It’s co-created.
