Today, we’re talking about a topic that could truly transform your life if you let it: Networking.
Now before you roll your eyes hear me on this—because I’m not talking about handing out business cards in a hotel lobby or making awkward small talk over cheap coffee. I’m talking about something deeper, more meaningful and much more powerful.
How to Network so you can build and maintain powerful relationships that support your personal and professional growth.
DEVELOPING AND APPLYING techniques for powerful interpersonal relationships is essential —not just for career success, but for your happiness, your confidence, and your ability to reinvent yourself when life throws you a curveball.
Whether you’ve been laid off from a Fortune 1000 company, left a government job after years of so called stability, or you’re just quietly unhappy in your current role and craving more—you need a network.
First, you might have to ask yourself, why does networking feel so awkward for so many of us?
Here’s the truth: we’ve been taught to value independence. “I’ve got this.” “I’ll figure it out myself.” That rugged individualism might sound admirable—but in the real world, it can isolate us.
Especially after a layoff or career disruption, there’s often a sense of shame or fear. We think: “Once I’ve figured it out, then I’ll reach out.”
But here’s the thing: you figure it out by reaching out.
Think about the last big decision or breakthrough in your life. Chances are, someone helped guide you. Someone introduced you to a new idea, gave you encouragement, or opened a door you didn’t even know existed.
After a layoff, after a big pivot—networking becomes your lifeline. Not just to a job. But to clarity, confidence, and community.
Let me share a quick story.
A friend of mine, let’s call her Maya, spent 15 years in a high-level government position. She was great at her job, but after a restructuring, she found herself out of work—and out of her comfort zone. She didn’t know where to begin.
Instead of staying stuck, she started reaching out—slowly, one person at a time. She didn’t ask for a job. She asked about people’s stories. Their journeys. What excited them.
In six months, she didn’t just land a new role—she discovered a whole new career path she never even considered. And it happened through her network.
Let’s demystify this. What does real networking actually look like?
It’s not transactional. It’s not about “using” people. And it’s definitely not just about LinkedIn connections.
It’s about building relationships.
Here are some practical ways to get started:
- Reconnect with old colleagues. Reach out with a simple, “Hey, I’ve been thinking of you. How are you doing?” No agenda. Just connection.
- Attend virtual or in-person events—not just big conferences, but small group meetups, industry roundtables, even book clubs.
- Ask great questions. One of the most powerful ways to build trust is to be genuinely curious. Ask about their path. What’s lighting them up right now? What’s challenging them?
- Offer value. You don’t have to be an expert. Share a resource. Send them a book that reminded you of them. Make an intro between two people in your network who should know each other.
You don’t have to “network up”—connect with people on your level or just a step ahead of you. Your peers today are tomorrow’s leaders.
And here’s something we forget: Networking isn’t just about building relationships. It’s about being part of a conversation bigger than yourself.
There’s a saying I love: “Your network is your net worth.” But I think it goes deeper than that.
Your network is also your joy source.
When you’re feeling stuck, disconnected, or unsure of your next step, it’s often people—not plans—that help you move forward. It’s through conversations that we reconnect with who we are, what we value, and what we’re capable of.
In my own journey, I’ve seen this again and again.
I’ve had moments after a career change where I felt completely unmoored. But then I’d get on the phone with someone who said, “Hey, Doug, I’ve been where you are. Let me tell you what helped me.”
Those moments stick with you. They lift you.
And guess what? You get to be that person for someone else. That’s the beauty of networking—it’s a two-way gift.
Sometimes, your role in the network is to receive. Other times, it’s to give. Either way—you grow.
Here’s the biggest mistake I see people make: they only network when they need something.
It’s like trying to build a boat in the middle of a flood. It’s stressful, and it rarely works the way you want.
Networking should be a lifestyle, not a lifeboat.
So how do you make it part of your rhythm?
Here’s a simple system I call “The 1-1-1 Method”:
- One reach-out per week. Message someone new or someone you haven’t spoken to in a while.
- One value-add per week. Share an article, make an intro, send encouragement.
- One reflection per week. Ask yourself: “Who inspired me this week? What did I learn through connection?”
That’s it. Simple, sustainable, powerful.
And if you’re introverted? That’s okay. In fact, introverts are often the best networkers because they listen deeply and form authentic connections.
Remember: It’s not about quantity. It’s about quality and consistency.
Let me leave you with this:
The new version of your life—the version where you wake up excited, aligned, and free—might be one connection away.
One conversation.
One introduction.
One unexpected door that opens because you chose to show up, reach out, and invest in relationships.
You’re not alone in this journey. And you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.
There is power in people. There is purpose in connection. And there is possibility in every conversation you have.
Here’s your challenge for this week:
Reach out to one person. Just one. Not to ask for a job. But to connect. To listen. To grow.
And if you’ve been feeling lost after a layoff, a career change, or a season of transition—this is your reminder:
You don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to keep showing up.
